Cardiac ultrasound training

Focused cardiac transthoracic echocardiography for the intensivists, from first views to advanced haemodynamics

A two-level pathway combining a self-paced online curriculum with a hands-on workshop day. The basic course is recognised by the Swiss Society of Ultrasound in Medicine (SSUM); the advanced course is built for the European Diploma in Echocardiography (EDEC) of the ESICM.

Two levels, one progression

Choose your starting point

Both courses follow a flipped-classroom model: complete the theory online at your own pace, then consolidate your skills on volunteers and high-fidelity simulators during a supervised day.

Level 1 · Foundation

Focused Heart Ultrasonography

The essential transthoracic views and the structured, standardised reporting language every intensivist and acute-care physician needs at the bedside. SSUM component 13.

Online theory 1 hands-on day Volunteers + simulators SSUM · 8 credits
Level 2 · Advanced

Advanced Focused Transthoracic Echocardiography

Doppler-based haemodynamics, quantitative assessment and integration into complex ICU scenarios, for clinicians who have already mastered the basic views.

How the courses work

Flipped classroom, in three steps

1

Learn online

Work through the modular curriculum on pocus.academy at your own pace, with MCQ-based knowledge checks. Revisit any module before and after the workshop.

2

Practise hands-on

Spend a supervised day acquiring images on volunteers and working through pathology on high-fidelity simulators, with three to four learners per instructor.

3

Get certified

Pass the online MCQ and the practical assessment to receive a certificate documenting content, objectives and outcomes, suitable for your CME portfolio.
