Advanced Focused Transthoracic Echocardiography

A second-level programme for intensivists managing critically ill patients. It consolidates and extends advanced transthoracic competencies (Doppler-based haemodynamics and quantitative assessment) and integrates them into complex ICU decision-making.

Prerequisite. Proficiency in the cardiac views taught in the basic course is required. This ensures every participant starts from a standardised baseline of image-acquisition skills and core interpretation competencies.

Advanced online curriculum

Approximately twelve hours of self-paced modules on pocus.academy, with MCQ-based knowledge assessment. Transoesophageal echocardiography (TOE) is integrated into the theory; a hands-on TOE simulation session is in development for future editions.

Workshop stations

Normal measurements are taught on volunteers; pathology is taught on high-fidelity Vimedix® simulators; integration is rehearsed through interactive cases on screen. The day ends with a supervised practical test.
